When negotiating salary it is important to not limit yourself to negotiating base salary. Negotiate your entire compensation package. Negotiate for benefits, job perks, and other income impact variables like stock options, tuition reimbursement, and commission rates. Negotiate for the work/ life balance you want. If you’re a parent you might want to negotiate for flex work hours or remote work. Prepare for your salary negotiation so that you enter it with a few negotiation aces up your sleeve.

If you find yourself in a situation where the person you’re negotiating with says “There’s no budget” here’s a few examples of what you can negotiate in lieu of base salary:
